Wizz Air Championing a More Sustainable Aviation Future

Wizz Air is the most environmentally friendly low-cost carrier in the world, with the lowest carbon emissions intensity in Europe, if not the entire globe, as determined by the World Finance Sustainability Awards. With a commitment to technology and innovation, Wizz Air has been leading the charge on sustainable air travel.

The majority of organisations surely have sustainability at the top of their minds, with COP28 rapidly approaching. The aviation sector is working hard to address the global warming issue, lower its carbon footprint, and develop more environmentally friendly air travel options.

Although a plane can never be more environmentally friendly than a train or an electric car, Wizz Air is working to lead the way in sustainable aviation and has already met several significant targets related to its sustainability plan.

According to Wizz Air reports, they achieved an impressive 53.8 grams of CO2 per passenger per kilometre in the fiscal year 2023, an 11% reduction from the previous year. With this accomplishment, Wizz Air has recorded its lowest emissions intensity in a single fiscal year. We are leading by example and establishing industry standards in addition to breaking records.

The Hungarian ultra-low-cost carrier has already shown its commitment to a more sustainable future for aviation by constantly upgrading its fleet with the latest fuel-efficient aircraft.

The latest Airbus A321neo aircraft operated by Wizz Air is significantly more fuel-efficient as compared to previous generation aircraft. Wizz Air boasts one of the youngest fleets globally, with an average age of four years, as compared to the fleet age of an average of 10 years of its competitors. This not only helps its environmental efforts by lowering the intensity of pollutants, but it also improves passenger comfort during flights.

The use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which has the enormous potential to cut carbon emissions by as much as 80%, is a pillar of Wizz Air's sustainability strategy. They have established alliances and made investments in SAF, guaranteeing volumes for the European mandates slated to take effect in 2025.

They have four agreements in place with the world’s leading SAF producers, including Neste and OMV. They also made our first equity investment of £5m into Firefly, a UK-based biofuel company developing the technology to produce SAF from sewage sludge, and participated in a $50m investment in CleanJoule, a US-based company making biofuel from renewable agricultural residues and other waste biomass.

Consumers are slowly shifting their attention from booking traditional network carriers that cannot promise better carbon emission reduction results to choosing low-cost airlines. And flying with Wizz Air can reduce a passenger’s CO2 emissions by almost 50% more.
