Etihad Achieved a Key Milestone in Pilot Training and Flight Operations
Another significant advancement in pilot training and flight operations has been made by Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates.
Following the completion of extensive pilot training and the successful acquisition of stringent regulatory approvals, Etihad has qualified its pilots to operate Airbus A350 and A380 aircraft interchangeably. With this accomplishment, Etihad is positioned as one of the world's leading airlines in terms of pilot adaptability.
Usually, airline pilots are limited to operating a single type of aircraft. However, through a specialized program approved by the aircraft manufacturer and the Civil Aviation Authority, known as "Mixed Fleet Flying," or "MFF," pilots may be able to operate two similar aircraft types under certain conditions, such as a high degree of similarity in the flight deck, pilot procedures, and the implementation of special training.
Mohammad Al Bulooki, the Chief Operating Officer at Etihad Airways, said, “Etihad Airways is proud to be one of the very first airlines to qualify its pilots to fly both the Airbus A350 and A380.
“This achievement will enhance the resilience and flexibility of the airline’s network and is a testament to our commitment to continuously push the boundaries of efficiency, innovation, and customer satisfaction, and at all times ensuring safety is Etihad’s number one priority.”
Setting new norms for fleet commonality, Etihad has during the last ten years secured comparable permissions to certify its Airbus pilots to fly the A320 and A330 types, A330 and A340 types, and its Boeing pilots to fly the 777 and 787 types. Building on this history, Etihad's widebody network will become even more flexible and efficient with the most recent approval to operate the Airbus A350 and A380.
