easyJet Launches Generation easyJet Pilot Training Programme

The famed Generation easyJet Pilot Training program, which trains prospective pilots with little to no experience to become qualified co-pilots in the cockpit of an Airbus A320 commercial airliner in around two years, has been launched, according to an announcement made by easyJet. Approximately 200 spots are still available this year, and over 1000 new pilots are expected to join easyJet by 2028 as part of a five-year recruitment drive.

EasyJet has been focusing on addressing this industry-wide issue for a number of years with programs like recruitment campaigns, its pilot school visits program, and Summer Flight School. Currently, just about 6% of pilots worldwide are women.

Thus, compared to the UK industry average of 6.5%, women make up 7.5% of easyJet's pilots in the UK. The airline currently employs 300 women, including 99 captains, and has been working to dispel myths and prejudices about the position to encourage more women to apply.

After research showed that half of the British people (50%) were unaware of the requirements to become an airline pilot and train to fly a commercial jet, the airline earlier this month developed an online test that evaluates some of the essential skills needed to become an airline pilot.

Flight training is conducted in the United States, and instruction is conducted at the airline's aviation academy located in Gatwick, Milan, Brussels, or Madrid with its training partner, CAE. Graduates of easyJet's training program start working as co-pilots after completing it successfully.

Captain Kate West, Pilot Training Manager at easyJet said, “We are delighted to reopen applications for this year’s Generation easyJet Pilot Training Programme as part of our drive to recruit 1,000 new pilots and encourage more people to join this fantastic profession.

“The training to become a pilot focuses on skills such as communication and problem-solving, so when working as a team in the flight deck, diversity is incredibly valuable.

“Tackling stereotypes about our job is critical to driving this and while we are proud to have many more women flying with us today, we know there is always more to be done to increase all forms of diversity and remain committed to leading the industry in this.

“I joined easyJet over ten years ago as a growing airline with opportunities for career progression and a fantastic reputation for training. This is as true now as it was back then and we look forward to seeing many more new pilots joining easyJet in this rewarding career in the months and years to come.”

Applying to the Generation easyJet Pilot Training Programme is currently available for prospective pilots. Visit Generation easyJet Pilot Training Programme | CAE Entry Criteria for more information.
