Middelfart – The Pioneer of Green Tourism

Middelfart is a historically and culturally enriched town in Denmark, situated on the banks of the Little Belt strait. As an acknowledgement of the relentless efforts of the town toward sustainable tourism and green transitions, it was chosen as the 2022 European Destination of Excellence. From hotels with certified climate-friendly accommodation to nature tourism and cultural events aiming to create environmental awareness, Middelfart offers world-class sustainable tourism experiences.

The proximity between the town and the biggest marine nature park in Denmark, the Little Belt Nature Park, which holds the densest population of small whales or porpoises in the world. Whale safaris, cycling and hiking through diversified landscapes of the nature parks are just to name a few of the activities visitors can enjoy along the 117 km of coastline. The “Belt in Balance” initiative is the perfect example of the efforts made by Middelfart to integrate sustainable thinking and awareness of marine and coastal ecosystems while also boosting tourism. On the Old Little Belt Bridge, 65 meters off the ground, tourists can get an uninterrupted view of the sea, forest, and the town.

Apart from nature, people are also drawn to the festivals and cultural events organised in the city, depending on the time of the year.  From August 4th to August 6th, 2022, audiences can enjoy big band jazz music rhythms at the Middelfart Jazz Festival which will be followed by the Nordic Yoga Festival on August 14th, 2022.

For three days in early September, the city will host the annual event of the national People’s Climate Meeting, which puts climate at the top of the agenda as part of the Climate Lab – Next Generation concept. They will be using art as a unifying force for climate change by transmitting Interviews, music, and speeches into space via satellite.

The EU Smart Tourism Podcast series discusses smart tourism and the potential of the tourism industry in Europe. The representatives of Middelfart went as guest speakers on the show and shared their experiences as sustainability pioneers.

Accessibility, digital, sustainability, and creativity are what define Middelfart as the future of tourism in Europe Along with the 2022 European Capitals of Smart Tourism València and Bordeaux. When you are ready to embark on your next journey, consider this Danish destination for the perfect getaway.
